500 Strong: The State of Black Ownership in NY’s Cannabis Market

Culture & Market Growth

New York has officially crossed a massive milestone: there are now over 500 licensed adult-use dispensaries open for business across the state. But the number that matters most to us isn't just the total—it’s the percentage of those businesses that look like us.

The Equity Numbers
According to the OCM’s latest reports from December 2025, roughly 57% of all licenses issued statewide are held by Social and Economic Equity (SEE) businesses. This includes minority-owned businesses, women-owned businesses, and service-disabled veterans.
While this number is higher than almost any other state in the country, the fight isn't over. "Equity" on paper must translate to "Sustainability" in the bank account.
Support Black Brands
As the market floods with corporate cannabis and multi-state operators (MSOs), the "Cannabis in Black" mission is to intentionally circulate our dollars. We are seeing the rise of strong Black-owned brands on shelves, like Silly Nice, which has expanded into over 100 locations.
When you walk into a dispensary this weekend, ask your budtender: "What Black-owned flower do you have in stock?"
The market is maturing. Prices are dropping. Competition is heating up. For 2026, our resolution is simple: We don't just want a seat at the table; we want to own the building.
Next Steps
Would you like me to help you draft a specific social media caption to promote that January 12th deadline article? It seems like the most urgent piece to get out to your followers immediately.
